Post-operative Care in Jazzpurr House

INCISION

Females:

1.         Check incision on cats once daily. Preferably in the morning.

2.         The incision on most female cats will be on their belly. One of the veterinarians will be making the incision on the side of the cats.

3.         Ensure the cats are not licking their incision. If they are licking the incision, place an E-collar around their neck.

4.         Report immediately if:

there is active bleeding from the incision (a little dried up blood may be normal)

there is significant redness around the incision

there is a pus-like or clear coloured discharge from the incision

Males:

1.         If the male cats are still at Jazzpurr house the day following surgery, lift their tail and check their incision.

2.         The tiny incision in their scrotum will not be noticeable. You just want to make sure that nothing odd (pinkish material) is hanging out from their scrotum.

FEEDING

1.         Cats should not be fed the same day as surgery is performed.

2.         As long as the cat is awake enough (ie. able to lift head up and lay on belly rather than side), they may be given water before you leave for the night.

3.         Normal feeding may be resumed the following day.

LITTER

1.        Kitty litter may be placed in cage once the cat is awake enough (ie. able to lift head up and lay on belly). If the cat is not able to do this by the end of the night, place newspaper strips only in cage (ie. no clay litter).

HOT WATER BOTTLES

1.         Cats get cold while under anaesthesia.

2.         If the cats body temperature is still below normal upon returning to Jazzpurr House, they may have hot water bottles in their cage.

3.         These should be changed when the water is no longer warm.

4.         A hot water bottle should never be placed directly against the cat. Always place a towel in between.

5.         Remove the hot water bottle when the cats temperature is normal, or the cat is moving around enough so that they won’t lie near the bottle.
