STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE

DIVISION:               Spay/Neuter Services

TITLE:                     Anaesthesia induction

DATE:                     November 23, 2001

PROCEDURE:

1.       Ensure that anaesthetic machine (bain system) is set up in order to administer oxygen if needed.

2.       Fill out surgery log including weight and volume of drugs to be administered for all surgery patients in the order that surgery is to be performed.

3.       Injectable Rompun/Ketamine given IM will be used to anaesthetize all cats.

          a.       Dosage of Rompun/Ketamine will be according to the chart provided.

          b.       Draw up the appropriate volume of Rompun/Ketamine into a TB syringe for each cat and tape it to the cat’s clipboard. On the tape write “RK”.

4.       If the veterinarian is finished examining the first cat to undergo surgery,

that cat may be given its anaesthetic injection which will take about 5-10 minutes to take effect.

          a.       RK injection is given IM in either the hind leg muscle (easier for fractious cats) or lumbar muscles. An assistant must restrain each cat for the technician using the appropriate degree of restraint depending on the disposition of the cat (ie: towel, gloves, net etc.).

5.       The time the injection was given should be recorded in surgical log as technician start time.

6.       Place the cat back in its container/cage to allow the injection to take effect.

7.       In the rare situation where an IM injection cannot be given, chamber anaesthesia may be used.

8.       Gently shake the cat or container to confirm cat is asleep.

9.       Prep the cat according to procedure once cat is asleep.

10.     Have the veterinarian indicate to you when to anaesthetize each cat depending on surgical speed and anticipated technician prep time.

11.     The cat should be anaesthetized and just require a final prep when transferred to surgery immediately upon the veterinarian completing the previous surgery. Timing is important!

12.     One person should be transporting the cat to surgery while another person should be transporting the cat that just had surgery back to the treatment area for recovery.

13.     A technician or assistant should be in charge of recovery of cats.
