STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE

 

DIVISION:               Spay/Neuter Services

TITLE:                     Prep

DATE:                     November 23, 2001


PROCEDURE:

1.        Any cats that were not able to be examined previous to anaesthesia due to their fractious nature, should be examined now whenever possible.

2.        Check the genitals to ensure male cats are male (and unneutered) and female cats are female. Neutered male cats can be easily mistaken for females.

3         Prepare oxygen mask; use low flow rate for all surgeries.


FEMALE CATS

1.        Place BNP ophthalmic ointment in both eyes.

2..       Express bladders on any non-pregnant females.

3..       Administer antibiotic injection according to dosing chart.

4.        Shave females from 1 inch cranial to umbilicus to pubic area and approximately 1 stroke on either side of the nipples. Clip farther cranial for any possibly pregnant or obese cats.

5..       Vacuum away excess hair.

6.        Check for evidence of previous spay scar.

7.        Scrub entire clipped area with hibitane scrub.

8.        Using gauze squares, prep clipped area with alcohol. Use 1 gauze square and go from centre of clipped area to outer area. Repeat with 2 more gauze squares. If dirt is appearing on gauze squares, repeat steps #5 and #6.

9.        Without contaminating prepped area, transport cat to surgery when ready.

10.      Have the surgery pack, gloves, and gown if needed opened up in the surgery room. Drop a scalpel blade and a pack of suture on sterile field.

11.      Tie cat to surgical table.

12.      Apply final prep of povidone-iodine using spray bottle to prepped area.

13.      REMEMBER TO MONITOR VITALS INCLUDING RESPIRATIONS, HEART RATE, AND MUCOUS MEMBRANE COLOUR OF CAT WHILE PREPPING, DURING AND AFTER SURGERY. .


MALE CATS

1.        Place BNP ophthalmic ointment in both eyes.

2.        Open a pair of surgical gloves. Open the neuter pack. Drop as many scalpel blades on the sterile field as neuters to be done that day..

3.        Pluck testicles. Ensure that there are two testicles.

4.        If scrotum is dirty, scrub with hibitane. If clean, proceed to step #5

5.        Cat neuters may be done in treatment area. If treatment area is busy (eg. with recovering cats) and surgical suite is free, transport cat to surgery.

6.        Squirt alcohol on testicles.

7.        Tuck tail out of way of surgical field.

8.        REMEMBER TO MONITOR VITALS INCLUDING RESPIRATIONS, HEART RATE, AND MUCOUS MEMBRANE COLOUR OF CAT WHILE PREPPING, DURING AND AFTER SURGERY.
