STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE

TITLE:          Anaesthetic recovery

PROCEDURE:

 

1.       Record in surgical log the time that surgery was complete.

2.       Transport cat from surgical area to treatment area for recovery.

          a.       During transport apply pressure to right ear which has been tipped using a gauze square.

3.       Apply some moistened styptic powder (moisten in a little water to make a paste) to the ear to stop bleeding

          a.       If bleeding continues, a hemostat may need to be applied for a short while. A straight mosquito hemostat may be removed from the surgical pack used on that cat.

          b.       Wash with warm water any remaining prep solution around the incision. Left over gauze from the surgical pack may be used.

4.       Female cats should be given sc injection of ketoprofin according to chart.

5.       The rectal temperature, heart rate, respirations, and mucous membrane colour of the cat recovering must be monitored and recorded. Alert veterinarian if: the cat is not breathing, mucous membranes are not pink (but rather a bluish/gray) or if heart rate is not within the range 100-180 beats per minute. The incision should be checked for any bleeding.

6.       1cc of rabies vaccine should be administered SQ low down (level of the stifle) in the right hindleg.

7.       The cat should be placed in a cage wrapped in a towel and surrounded by two heated gel packs wrapped in towels.

8.       All cats should be given an injection of yohimbine (0.11mg/kg IM) to reverse anesthesia 45-60 minutes after anesthesia was induced.

9.       All cats in recovery should be checked every 4-5 minutes. If there are any concerns heart rate and mucous membrane colour should be checked and a veterinarian notified immediately.

10.     All cats must be conscious before removal from the clinic.

11.     Cat, wrapped in clean towel and surrounded by heated gel packs is moved into a carrier for transport in a heated vehicle.
